What you need to know about breast ultrasound
Breast ultrasound is an ultrasound examination method that allows you to assess the structure of tissues and see the presence of cysts and neoplasms.
The method is also used for preventive examination of the mammary glands, to clarify the diagnosis obtained using mammography, and to control the taking of a puncture from suspicious formations for more detailed diagnosis.
Indications for breast ultrasound
- chest pain;
- changes in the shape, size, contours and condition of the breast skin;
- enlargement of axillary, supraclavicular and subclavian lymph nodes;
- nipple swelling and fluid discharge;
- pregnancy planning;
- pregnancy and lactation;
- diagnosis of cysts, tumors and other neoplasms;
- assessment of the condition of the breast after injury or inflammation;
- assessment of the condition of silicone prostheses after breast augmentation surgery;
- monitoring the effectiveness of treatment of dyshormonal diseases of the mammary glands.
It is important to remember that in order to diagnose pathological changes in the mammary glands in a timely manner, examinations should be performed regularly - at least once a year, and after reaching the age of 50 - twice a year.
Breast ultrasound is safe, painless, and usually takes about 30 minutes.
How to prepare for a breast ultrasound
There is no special preparation for breast ultrasound, but in order to increase the accuracy of the results, it is necessary to conduct the examination on a certain day of the menstrual cycle. It is advisable to choose the first half of the cycle (day 5-10). If a woman takes hormonal contraceptives or is in menopause, the time of ultrasound does not matter.
