Ultrasound of the neck vessels

What you need to know about ultrasound of the neck vessels
Neck ultrasound (neck ultrasound) is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure that allows you to assess the condition of the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain, including the carotid and vertebral arteries. This study is important for detecting atherosclerosis, stenosis, thrombosis, or other blood flow disorders.
Main indications for ultrasound of the neck vessels
1. Symptoms of cerebrovascular accident: Dizziness, fainting, tinnitus, headache, impaired vision or coordination.
2. Suspicion of atherosclerosis of the neck vessels: In patients with high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes.
3. Previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA): To monitor the condition of the vessels.
4. Presence of risk factors: Smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, hereditary predisposition to cardiovascular diseases.
5. Assessment of treatment effectiveness: After surgery on the neck vessels or when taking medications that affect blood circulation.
6. Preventive examination: In the elderly or those at high risk of stroke.
Preparing for the study
Preparing for an ultrasound of the neck vessels is very simple, but there are a few tips that will help you get the most accurate results:
1. Do not consume caffeine and energy drinks 4–6 hours before the procedure. Caffeinated drinks (coffee, tea, cola) can change the tone of blood vessels, which will affect the results of the study.
2. Avoid smoking on the day of the test. Nicotine also constricts blood vessels and can distort the data.
3. Do not apply creams, ointments or cosmetics to the neck. This may prevent the ultrasound sensor from making normal contact with the skin.
4. Wear comfortable clothing that leaves your neck exposed. For example, a wide-necked T-shirt or a shirt with an unbuttoned collar.
