Before enrolling in kindergarten, a child must undergo a medical examination and basic tests. This is a standard procedure that is a mandatory part of the kindergarten registration process and allows the pediatrician to issue an appropriate certificate about the child's health.
Why should a child take tests before kindergarten?
The main goal of laboratory research includes 2 aspects:- Monitoring the child's health. Tests help assess the baby's overall health, identify hidden problems (low hemoglobin levels, slow inflammation) and diseases in the early stages that are asymptomatic.
- Epidemic safety of other children in the team. Kindergarten is a closed environment in which infections and parasites spread very quickly.
What requirements apply in Ukraine?
The Ukrainian healthcare system lacks a single approved list of documents; the decision is based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the practice of pediatricians.
Regulatory practice of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine
According to the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, for enrollment in a preschool educational institution, it is necessary to provide a medical certificate of form No. 086/o. The basic list of tests includes standard tests that help assess the general health of the child and exclude the most common infectious and parasitic diseases.
The role of the pediatrician and medical certificate
The pediatrician conducts a physical examination of the child and, based on the information received, decides which tests the child needs. After receiving the results of all the tests, the doctor issues a medical certificate 086/o, which is an official confirmation that the child can attend kindergarten. The certificate contains a conclusion about the state of health, a group for physical education and recommendations for the regimen.
Who sends the child for tests?
A referral for examination and testing at a public clinic is issued by a family doctor or pediatrician with whom the child has signed a declaration. It is possible to have tests at a private laboratory without a referral.
Mandatory tests before kindergarten in Ukraine
Despite the lack of a single approved list, there is a basic set of tests that are required by almost all kindergartens in Ukraine:- complete blood count ;
- general urine analysis ;
- feces for helminth eggs ;
- scraping for enterobiasis .
Complete blood count
This is one of the most informative basic tests that allows you to assess the general condition of the child's body. The analysis shows the level of hemoglobin , the number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, as well as signs of inflammation, anemia, allergic reactions and other abnormalities.General urine analysis
Helps monitor the functioning of the child's urinary system, identify possible inflammatory processes and other pathologies in the kidneys and bladder. Together with a general blood test, it gives the pediatrician a comprehensive picture of the baby's health.Timely basic tests before kindergarten are not a formality, but an important stage in caring for your child's health. They help make sure that your child is ready for a new team and protected from possible risks.

Stool for helminth eggs
Detects the most common parasites (roundworms, pinworms, toxocara). Preschool children are at risk of contracting helminths through contact with sand, soil, toys and animals. In children's groups, the risk of parasite transmission is particularly high, so this test is mandatory.
Scraping for enterobiasis
Detects pinworm eggs, the most common parasite in preschool children. They are easily transmitted from child to child through toys, bedding, household items, and contact games.
Additional tests as indicated
If the child has chronic diseases or the pediatrician notices certain pathologies during the examination (for example, a tendency to allergies, digestive problems), additional tests are prescribed:
- blood test for sugar ;
- checking vitamin D levels ;
- consultation and tests from specialists (endocrinologist, gastroenterologist).
In the event of an outbreak of an infectious disease in the region, the pediatrician may require additional examinations to prevent the spread of the infection.
Some private kindergartens may have expanded requirements for medical examinations, including consultations with specialists or additional laboratory tests. Parents are notified of any additional requirements when applying to the institution.
Validity of tests in Ukraine
It is important to remember that laboratory test results have a limited validity period. Complete blood and urine tests are usually valid for 30 days, and tests for helminths and scrapings for enterobiasis - up to 10 days. Therefore, it is recommended to plan a visit to the laboratory about a week before the visit to the pediatrician for a certificate.
