Mumps vaccination
What you need to know about mumps
Mumps is an infectious disease caused by an RNA virus that affects the salivary glands, less commonly other glandular organs (pancreas, testicles, ovaries, mammary glands, etc.), as well as the nervous system.
How to diagnose?
Diagnosis is clinical, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay or complement fixation is also possible.
How to treat?
Treatment of mild clinical forms is symptomatic; if complications develop, hospitalization to an infectious disease hospital and additional consultation with specialized specialists is indicated.
What are the symptoms?
The incubation period is up to 18-20 days, after which symptoms appear:
- Malaise
- Temperature increase
- Characteristic swelling of the salivary glands in the parotid area
- Pain in the parotid area
- Hearing impairment
- Pain when chewing
- Dry mouth
- Pain in the sublingual and submandibular salivary glands
- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea are possible.
What is prevention?
Prevention of mumps is primarily timely vaccination. Mumps vaccination is part of mandatory measures and provides reliable protection against this disease.
Mumps vaccination creates lasting immunity that protects against the disease for 10 years or even longer.
Vaccination is usually carried out as part of the combined MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella).
Modern vaccines undergo thorough testing and are safe for the health of children and adults.
Vaccination is the most effective way to protect against mumps. Take care of your family's health by contacting your doctor for up-to-date information about vaccinations!
