What you need to know about diphtheria
Diphtheria is an infectious disease caused by the corynebacterium, Bacillus diphtheriae. The disease affects the oropharynx, throat, bronchi, skin, and other organs.
The method of infection is airborne during a conversation with a sick person, when coughing and sneezing. It can also be transmitted by contact and household means. Diphtheria causes the following complications: myocarditis and paralysis of the respiratory muscles of the larynx, neck, and vocal cords. Respiratory paralysis can lead to death.
How to diagnose?
To diagnose diphtheria, a laboratory examination of a swab from the throat and nose is carried out.
How to treat?
Treatment of diphtheria – the use of antitoxic antidiphtheria serum, antibacterial and detoxification therapy. For treatment to be effective, it must be started in the first hours after infection.
What are the symptoms?
The incubation period of the disease is 2-7 days, after which the following symptoms appear:
- Headache, drowsiness, sore throat, difficulty swallowing
- Moderate sore throat (not as severe as with tonsillitis)
- Initially, the temperature is 37 degrees (gradually increases to 38-40)
- In diphtheria of the oropharynx, smooth, gray fibrinous films appear on the surface of the mucous membrane of the throat, after removal of which the lesion site bleeds.
- The appearance of croup – blockage of the respiratory tract by diphtheria film and edema
- Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck
What is prevention?
Diphtheria prevention is, first of all, vaccination of children and adults, as well as adherence to personal hygiene rules:
- Frequent hand washing.
- Wiping household and office items.
- Regular ventilation of rooms.
- Wet cleaning.
